Chocobo

You know you’ve officially “made it” when you have adorable plushies fashioned after your inherently cute design. The Chocobo is a staple in any Final Fantasy game. A monster nonetheless, but a cute one.

The Beginning of the Legacy

You scurry across the alien rock, clutching your arm cannon with apprehension. The hum of the alarm in your ear informs you that you’re one blow away from death, and resources are scarce. Alien rock lines the hallways to a mysterious red door ahead. “One missile left,” you realize as you take aim at the door. The missile is the only way of getting through to the other side, but also one of your final means of defense. You shrug aside caution and loose the missile from within your arm. A breathe of relief escapes your lips as the red shade fades to gray and the door opens, a portal to dangers unknown.

Knowing full well that your next step may be your last, you enter the next area scanning the floors and walls for any signs of dangers.  A hum in the air filtered through electricity buzzes in the darkness and a cold chill runs down your spine. The bio-weapon known as Metroid hovers menacingly above the cave floor. Thinking you’d be better off heading in the direction from whence you came, the door behind you slides shut, sealing your fate. Large mandibles extend from beneath its gelatinous body with hunger. Pure energy builds from within the confines of your cannon, but the usual comfort that charge brings is met with fear. The Metroid seems drawn to it. The creature darts through the air in a zig-zag formation and you realize you only have one shot. Despite the Varia suit’s warning, you steady your next shot and the glow of plasma blinds you to your fate.

Augmented reality (AR) sounds like something straight out of the pages of a William Gibson or Philip K. Dick novel. In the minds of the general population, virtual reality is far more palpable than ever before with headsets like the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. While the gaming industry seems to favor VR headsets at the moment, perhaps it’d be a more worthwhile endeavor to push the boundaries of AR even further. Pokemon GO is proof that AR will always be a bigger deal in the eyes of the general population for a number of reasons.

Shiren the Wanderer: Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate on PS Vita

Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate offers much to fans of hardcore rogue-likes and those looking to dip their feet in the genre. But be warned, while the game is friendly to those who may be playing a rogue-like for the first time, it never holds your hand. In fact, it lures you to a dark cave, pushes you inside, and bombs the entrance shut.

You play as the silent Shiren as you make your way up the titular Tower of Fortune. The legend surrounding the tower claims the structure is controlled by a God capable of changing one’s fate with a roll of some destiny-defining dice. You and Koppa, your talking Ferret sidekick, set out on this new adventure in the hopes of helping grief-stricken townsfolk, and maybe change the tides of fate to your advantage.

Pokemon Snap 2

What better way to capitalize on the nostalgia factor of Pokemon than for Nintendo to create a sequel to one of the oddest spinoffs in the history of the franchise? In a series known for imprisoning Pokemon inside balls, Pokemon Snap subverted audience’s attention by allowing players to capture the wonderful world of Pokemon inside the preview monitor of a camera.

Ever wonder what Hanzo says when he activates his ultimate? For those who don’t understand Japanese, it might seem like a simple translation.

When Hanzo activates his ultimate, his battle cry can be heard across the battlefield, and enemies run and hide. He shouts, “Ryuuga wagateki wo kurau!” That’s the phonetic translation of 龍が我が敵を食らう (Kanji and Hiragana).

When Genji activates his ultimate, he shouts out: “Ryuu Gekiken!” That’s the phonetic translation of the Kanji: 竜撃剣. In Japanese, Ryuu means dragon, and Gekiken means Kendo.

1. The Last of Us Remastered

Many thought the jump from PS3 to PS4 wouldn’t be huge in terms of graphical fidelity, but The Last of Us Remastered quickly silences any naysayers. Not only did the Remaster up the resolution from 720p to 1080p, it also improved how the game ran. The original Last of Us had a frame rate of 30fps while occasionally dipping below when things got crazy, but the Remaster provides players with a steady 60fps.

Last week, the world caught a glimpse of the newest starting lineup for the upcoming Pokemon Sun and Moon games. The internet was abuzz with talk of their favorites. The clear winner was Rowlet, a Grass/Flying owl Pokemon who can attack without making a sound, and turn its head around to face its trainer during battle.

Dark Souls III multiplayer is an interesting thing. So far, it’s delivered brutal fight clubs, greek tragedies, and now – the fashion police.

Ever since the original Dark Souls, fans of the game have stressed the importance of form over over usability. In short – if it looks good, use it. The defensive stats and buffs the armor offers matters very little, especially near the end of the game, so you might as well look good. But, some of us may not be as fashion forward as others. Cue the fashion police.

FULL SPOILERS FOR DARK SOULS III AHEAD!

Dark Souls III isn’t the type of game to hold your hand and explain all its mechanics to you upfront. In fact, many players can complete many playthroughs without fully understanding just how deep and intricate all systems run.

Even the most experienced SoulsBorne players are having a hard time getting acclimated to Dark Souls III challenging environment. Why not make it easier on yourself and get a quick run-down by a seasoned pro?

FromSoft’s Souls games are infamous for their vague story. Ultimately, it’s about the player trying to make their way from point A to point B while killing anything big enough to stand in their way. After awhile, you kill these obstacles until there’s nothing left to kill – then the credits roll and you start NG+.

The impending release of Dark Souls III has the internet tapping into their inner-sadist by replaying all the Souls games (Bloodborne, too) in preparation. But why not make your replay (or first play through) a little more interesting? Have the halls of Sen’s Fortress lost their appeal as you easily yawn past all its countless traps? Does the shining city of Anor Londo lack a little luster every time you see it through your umpteenth playthrough? Do you laugh in the faces of Smough and Ornstein? Then this special challenge is for you.

2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Pokemon. Who knew that a series about a child leaving their family behind to pursue a career in professional monster wrangling would resonate with so many people across the globe? For many, Pokemon has been a constant in their lives. The pocket monster seed was planted in their childhood and nursed throughout decades, directly influencing their lives in ways unseen.

A normal person may be met with fear when they come across an uncharted cave, but not you. You see a cave and get annoyed, because you forgot to bring a flashlight. Believe it or not, Pokemon has changed the way you see the world.

Megaman Legacy Collection on Nintendo 3DS

The Megaman Legacy Collection for the 3DS is exactly what it sounds like: a portable version of the console release of the Legacy Collection released in 2015. While the 3DS version doesn’t add anything new, it’s still an excellent collection of platformers that will keep fans and newcomers entertained on their commute or roadtrip.

The Megaman Legacy Collection contains the first six Megaman Games, all faithfully ported to the 3DS. The games’ tight level-design, clever enemy placement, and power-ups all help to remind players what makes Megaman games so “mega.” The stand-outs in the Legacy Collection are the original Megaman, Megaman 2, and Megaman 3; while the later games still suffer from a lack of innovation.
